" Cuba Battles The Odds And Wins "

HBN, HAVANA, Cuba, Fri. Dec. 31 (2004): Despite tighter restrictions on travel to Cuba by the United States George Bush administration and some trouble with hurricanes, the island’s tourism sector managed to record a sharp 8 percent increase this year (2004).

Cuba’s Tourism Minister Manuel Marrero announced this past week that more than 2 million tourists visited the island in 2004, the largest number ever.

He added that this year the performance of the sector has been favorable, with the 8 percent growth rising one percent above the forecast of the World Tourism Organization for the Caribbean region.

Most of the visitors he said came from Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Mexico, Greece, Turkey, Japan, China and Russia.

Hotel rooms across the island currently stand at 41,000, and 70 percent of them are of the four- or five-star category, the minister revealed.

Last year (2003), about 1.9 million foreigners visited Cuba. Tourism now represents 41 percent of Cuba's foreign exchange income - a leap from just 4 percent in 1990, added the minister. – Hardbeatnews.com
