The Caribbean Diaspora

" unites for Notting Hill Carnival "

The vibrant colours of the Caribbean flooded the streets of London this weekend to celebrate carnival. The Colourful Angels joined thousands of other revellers to bring you photos, audio and footage clips from Europe's biggest street party!!!

A sea of vibrant colours flowed through the streets

The Caribbean Diaspora living in Britain united together this bank-holiday weekend to celebrate the annual street party, the Notting Hill Carnival.

A sea of vibrant colours flowed through the streets of north-west London as thousands of revellers, adorned in the flags of the Caribbean islands, danced the day and night away.

Jamaica, Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Dominica, Trinidad & Tobago were just some of the islands being represented in the array of colours (see Black Britain's carnival gallery).

As a celebration of culture, heritage and pride, the carnival was a scintillating display of the tradition passed down through the generations of West Indian immigrants since the docking of Windrush in 1948.

Showcasing the artistry of some of the most prominent black costume designers in the region, people danced alongside the steel pans as the magnificent Mas bands lead the procession.

Weaving in an out the streets around Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park, the crowd followed the steel band floats and the dozens of sound systems dotted all around the festival.

The Colourful Angels decided to head down to the children's carnival on Sunday and "whine-up" alongside others to hit Calypso tunes such as "Follow the leader, leader, leader" and we even managed to put forward a little "Footstep" so we could bring to you the delights of Europe's biggest street party.

Captured on video!

Black Britain's video camera captured all the great moments of the day, from the colourful processions, to the dancing crowds and managed to speak to one or two of the revellers.

A couple from the North of England celebrating their anniversary were first-timers at the carnival, along with two hip dudes from Los Angeles in the USA who were impressed with what Notting Hill had to offer.

The video camera also filmed the legendary Norman Jay as he rocked a massive crowd of followers with his unique carnival mix.

But rather than tell you any more about the day we suggest that you watch the video clips for yourself and share the experience of Notting Hill Carnival 2005

Revellers included a woman who started work at 5.30am

Carnival was in full swing when the Colourful Angels went down to jam with Norman Jay Good Times set situated on Southern Row/ West Row on Sunday afternoon.

As the video camera woman for the day, Deborah Gabriel and Alinah Roberts hustled onto the double Decker bus, Norman accompanied by his bother Joey, were spinning the best in rare groove and funky house.

His faithful followers, a real blend of the multi-cultural capital, blew their whistles and horns as the sun shone brightly down on west London.

Even the siblings duo's mother was catching the vibes as she listened intently to her young boys' talents, nurturing a soar throat she managed to make a sound in agreement to having a good time.

As the cheap (or should I say not so cheap) beers were flowing we caught up with revellers including a woman who started work at 5.30 that morning "and still going". "Wonderful weather, music bad, floats look bad man, wicked!" Alongside her friend clutching onto a half filled flask full of rum punch. Oh man!

Traditionally children's day the kids were out in their mass costumes and outfit looking cute.

We even bumped into ex-Gladiator Rhino out jamming with his kids as we then headed off to jam at 4Play sound where the DJs displayed that their talents didn't just end at spinning the tracks with their dancing skills being a force to be reckoned with (or not).

Jamming down the road with Mangrove steel band we heard news that they unfortunately didn't win the Panorama the night before but Ebony still set the standards for UK pan playing as they took first place in the annual competition.

We hope you were lucky enough to grab one of our complimentary exclusive Live247 vests as fights nearly broke out as carnival-goers couldn't get enough.

The weekend ended smoothly with a good time had by all so all that's left to say is see you in 2006!
