GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Evacuation started Monday (17 Oct 2005) in several coastal communities in Guyana after spring tides knocked down sections of the country's sea defence causing severe flooding.
The army has been deployed to affected communities where they are working closely with the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs).
"We have to be prepared to evacuate the people out quickly," said President Bharrat Jagdeo as he toured affected areas on the eastern coast Monday.
The worst hit villages are Beterverwagting, Triumph and Mon Repos along the Eastern Coast where water was overtopping the sea wall, while on the Western Coast, Stewartville, Uitvlugt and Leonora were inundated after water gushed through a 200-ft breach in the sea wall. Residents reported that they have suffered losses, including livestock.
