Hardbeatnews, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Fri. Dec. 2, 2005: Caricom observers are set to be in St. Vincent & the Grenadines to monitor the Dec. 7 general elections.
The regional group said yesterday it would send a five-member team, to be led by Bahamas' high commissioner to Canada, Phillip Smith, ahead of the election to observe preparations and monitor polling stations and ballot counting on voting day.
Election monitors from the Organization of American States are also set to observe the election
So far, 91,023 nationals across the island have reportedly registered to vote. But the opposition New Democratic Party says it received numerous reports of illegal voters registration.
The election will see Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves' and his United Labor Party defending their seat and seeking a second straight term.
There will be 223 polling stations throughout the country that will open next Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 5p.m. The preliminary counting of votes will be done at the polling stations and the final count will be conducted on December 8th.
General elections weren't constitutionally due until July 2006, but Gonsalves called an early election. – Hardbeatnews.com
