Guyana Minister, Family Members Assassinated





Hardbeatnews, GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Sat. Apr. 22, 1 p.m.: Shock and awe in Guyana as the country's Agriculture, Fisheries, Other Crops and Livestock Minister, Satyadeo Sawh and two family members were at 12:45 a.m today killed by gunmen at his home at La Bonne Intention on the east coast of Demerara.

Reports out of Guyana indicate that Sawh along with three others were shot to death by the gunmen. Of the three, two were his sister and brother, Rajpat Rai and Phulmattie Persaud, respectively, and one was a security guard.

Additionally, two other security guards are currently receiving medial attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation while another is in critical condition. Another brother of the minister was also shot and is receiving medical attention.



Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo has ordered an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the rising crime situation in Guyana. The Guyana Police Force is conducting investigations into this heinous attack and will be holding a press conference later today, a government statement said.

Sawh returned to Guyana in the early 1990's to join the governing People's Progressive Party. He had previously lived in Canada. He was born on June 13, 1955 in Central Mahaicony, Region Five, and went on to pursue and attain a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics/Business from York University, Toronto, Canada in 1982, a Certificate in Accounting and Business from the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Toronto, Canada, 1978.

During the years 1975 and 1992, Sawh served as a member and President of the Association of Concerned Guyanese and the political representative of the People’s Progressive Party in Canada. He was also editor in chief of the "Guyana Current" newspaper in Toronto.

From 1993 to 1996 Satyadeow Sawh served as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Guyana to the Republic of Venezuela, Columbia and Ecuador.

In 1996 he was appointed minister of Fisheries, Other Crops and Livestock with responsibility for Forestry. And in 2003 he was also tasked with the responsibility of acting minister of agriculture. – Hardbeatnews.com
