The Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg has donated $100,000 (cdn) for the cause, and the Sudanese community has raised another $20,000. About 150 community members have pledged to make $100 monthly payments.
However, Thuc said the group is about $8,000 short of its goal.
It's almost impossible for the group to get a loan from a bank, he said, because the community isn't well established in Winnipeg, so Thuc hopes generous Winnipeggers will contribute the $8,000 before the end of the week to get the project on its feet.
Thuc said a community centre would be an enormous achievement for the local community, and its programs would help keep Sudanese youth off the streets and out of gangs.
"That centre will be the first place owned by Sudanese in the whole of North America, and it will be really an asset to the city of Winnipeg," he said.
Anyone interested in donating to the centre can call (204) 774-6342.
