Jamaican Playwright

Wins Canadian Dora Awards





Hardbeatnews, TORONTO, Canada, Weds. June 28, 2006: Jamaican-born playwright, D'bi Young, Monday took home two top honors at the annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards.

Young won for best new play with her creation, Blood.claat, which tells the story of a Jamaican immigrant’s migration to Canada. She also took home the award for best actress in a lead role.

The dub poet, playwright and actress, originally from Maxfield Avenue, Kingston accepted the awards with thanks to the ancestors,her son, and her mother. She has also independently produced four dub albums and a single. Her new album ‘ky.ky,’ set for release this summer, “is an exploration of womban, identity, race and class. instruments ranging from rock guitar to batas to vocals create a rhythmic ensemble of madness and revolushun.”



The annual Toronto theater awards are named after UK migrant Dora Mavor Moore who arrived in Canada in 1896 and devoted her long life to creating theatre and theatre companies in her new home. The awards are produced and presented on behalf of the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts and celebrate excellence in Toronto theatre, dance and opera. – Hardbeatnews.com
